I am so happy to share this. Last month, I and Jonathan went for a small yet challenging hike to Bull Hill, NY. I was huffing and puffing THE ENTIRE TIME.
π
Then why am I celebrating?
π
We have to go to a recentish history to understand that –
I used to call myself a pro-ish hiker. I was hiking very often in and around the Himachal and Uttarakhand mountains in India. It was a win for me in my way. Growing up, I was an asthmatic, overweight, and overly shy girl who lacked confidence in public spheres ( still do at times).
π
I felt amazed when I went for my first trek with a bunch of strangers while having 0 background in trekking. The trek was a success and I can say that because there was no looking back after that.
π
But all this stopped in late 2018 when during a trek, I felt very tired and was struggling the entire time. At that time I had no clue what was the reason but my health just started to go downhill from there.
π
In January of 2019 I got diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and at that time I could barely take a walk for more than 10 minutes let alone go for any kind of trek. But at least I knew the reason behind this health loss. Slowly the walking increased then I tried many failed attempts at yoga then more walking and then many failed attempts at at-home workouts. I knew that I was making progress but boy was I impatient.
π
2 months ago, I shifted to New York and went to the gym after 4 years. I had hypo barely after 10 minutes of walking on the elliptical at Level 1 and not to mention, I was really tired. But kept pushing and slowly I had more strength. So when my husband suggested that we go for a hike, I really wanted to see how my performance would be and IT WAS A SUCCESS.
π
I completed the hike, even though I was sleeping the entire next day. I wanted to write this for all those who are struggling like I was. Not to sound preachy but I know, despite Type 1 or any other battle in life, we can do anything we set our minds to.
π
I am sure all of you have a story like this waiting to come out in the world. Please share how your comeback has been after a personal setback?
This is from my Instagram post and the hike that happened in June 2021.
